As generative AI becomes embedded in student life, the question is no longer simply whether students are using it - it is how we engage them meaningfully about when, how and why. This session moves beyond detection and prohibition to explore what thoughtful, productive communication with students about generative AI actually looks like in practice. Drawing on UCT's AI in Education Framework and the recently published Do's, Don'ts and Don't Knows Guide for Lecturers, we'll consider how to build transparency, set contextually appropriate expectations, and involve students in shaping a culture of responsible generative AI use in your courses.
