1 Introduction

These Terms and Conditions apply to short course enrolments purchased through the University of Cape Town (UCT) Learning Store. These serve as the contract between you and UCT relating to your participation in the short courses for which you have registered and paid.

2 Continuing Education Policy

Short Courses at UCT are offered in terms of the Senate Policy on Continuing Education Courses (2016). This policy sets out the academic accountability for short courses, nature of partnerships with external parties, record keeping requirements, assessment requirements, certification requirements and access to university facilities.

These terms and conditions incorporate the provisions of the Continuing Education Policy to the extent that they apply to short course participants.

3 Applicability of other policies

Short courses do not form part of the University’s formally accredited programmes, and participants in short courses are thus not students of the university. University policies relating to students therefore do not apply to short course participants, unless explicitly noted in these terms and conditions.

4 Use of personal information and privacy policy

Information about how UCT uses personal information is set out in the university’s privacy notices

5 Additional terms and privacy notices

The Learning Store provides access to short courses offered on behalf of a variety of short course providers at UCT. Please consult the websites of each applicable short course provider for any further conditions or policies which may apply:

6 Registration

Following your registration for a course on the Learning Store, the details you have provided will be used to create or update a participant record.

You may be required to provide additional identification for this process, such as a national identity document. If UCT is not able to verify your identity, your participation in the course may be suspended and/or your certificate for the course may be withheld.

7 Fees

Fees must be paid in full to receive access to the course. Fees are due one week before the start of a course, unless otherwise arranged with the short course provider. Failure to pay the required fees in full as per the emailed invoice will result in your registration being cancelled.

8 Cancellation

If you wish to cancel your participation in a course, you must cancel in writing at least one week before the start of the course, or you will forfeit the full course fee.

UCT reserves the right to cancel the course if insufficient registrations are received, in which case, the course fee will be refunded in full if already paid.

9 Academic Integrity

Where a short course includes assessment as a requirement for completion and issue of a certificate, participants are expected to uphold the same standards of academic integrity expected of students enrolled in formal programmes. This includes avoiding plagiarism, collusion or cheating as defined in section 4 of the Policy for the Prevention and Management of Academic Misconduct by Students (December 2023).

The Continuing Education Policy sets out the consequences of academic misconduct in paras 6.4 and 7.4. Where academic misconduct is identified and the participant is unable to provide an acceptable response, no certificate will be issued.

10 Relationship to accredited courses and programmes

Short courses which have been successfully completed may in some cases be considered for recognition of prior achievement as part of a formal accredited programme, as set out in para 2.6 of the Continuing Education Policy

11 Certificates

Participants who have complied with the requirements of the course and have paid the applicable course fees in full will be issued a certificate. Depending on the requirements of the course and the extent to which the course requirements have been met, the certificate award text may reflect as attended or passed.

Certificates will be available in digital form by default and may be viewed online. Hardcopy certificates will be available on request at an additional cost. Digital certificates may be verified online by third parties at a cost.
