What is Assessment Studio, who should attend and what purpose does it serve?
Assessment Studio offers staff who teach an opportunity to work in a supportive community on developing and refining the assessment activities and practices in their course. During the studio, we introduce key concepts underpinning assessment design and literacy, and encourage attendees to:
- create or refine plans, processes and materials for assessment and grading,
- share sound and caring practices,
- identify existing strengths,
- support engagement and interpretation of UCT’s assessment policy, and
- nurture their assessment literacy .
Assessment Studio is suited for teaching staff and staff who do course design with some control or interest in course assessment, aiming to enact change within their course context. It specifically focuses on enhancing assessment practices, while alternative offerings cater to those with a general interest in assessment literacy.
When does Assessment Studio run?
A workshop was completed in January. The next workshop will run from 1-3 July 2025 (9:30 - 13:00). You can book for the July cohort now by completing the form below. In the interim, if you would like to request a bespoke session, please contact Cheng-Wen Huang.
How does Assessment Studio work?
The studio runs in three interconnected parts:
- Part 1: Face-to-Face Workshop (Workshop 1, 1 July 2025, 9:30-13:00)
In this session, you’ll map out your current assessments and identify the assessment challenge or opportunity you want to address. We’ll discuss alignment between learning outcomes and assessments, explore good practices and exchange ideas to refine your approach. - Part 2: Independent Reflection and Development (2 July 2025)
Following the workshop, you’ll take time to work independently, reflect on insights gained and explore strategies to address your identified challenge. - Part 3: Showcase and Collaborative Feedback (Workshop 2, 3 July 2025, 9:30-13:00)
We reconvene for a second workshop where you’ll present your redesigned assessments. This is an opportunity to share progress, receive constructive feedback and refine your solution further.
Opportunities Beyond the Studio
On the basis of your participation, there are opportunities to pilot assessments, conduct research and publish, with the support of the Assessment Studio team.
