The OpeningScholarship project, a research initiative funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation, profiled open initiatives at UCT – some of which predated the internet or the the international open movement. The project produced 12 case studies, four of which were focused on research dissemination, five on teaching and learning, and three on social responsiveness. Backed by surveys of international literature on open scholarship, project seminars and conference presentations by project team members helped to identify areas of potential support and activity required to support an open institutional agenda and positioned CILT (then the Centre for Educational Technology) as a significant role-player and intermediary in supporting open practice at UCT.
