AI literacies workshop 1: Getting to know Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

05 March 2025
13:00 - 14:30 GMT+2
In-person: Green Room, CILT Office, Level 7, PD Hahn Building Upper Campus OR MS Teams
This is a practical workshop that offers a guided introduction to using some of the most common GenAI tools so that you can start experimenting for your own personal and professional contexts. The workshop assumes that you have worked through the first module of the AI literacies interactive guide for staff on Amathuba BEFORE you join the session. It will operate like a ‘flipped classroom’ model with the Amathuba module one material providing the pre-reading or lecture content that you’ll need to jump into the activities.
We will use Copilot, for which UCT has an A3 educational licence. During the workshop, you will be given some simple exercises to experience its capacities and reveal some of the flaws. We will also discuss strategies and practices to help guard against unethical or unintentional misuse of these powerful new tools.
While the workshop will focus on Copilot, other tools will be demonstrated, and you will be able to try them out with our help. Please bring your laptop along and a willingness to start using Copilot, ChatGPT and some of the other tools for yourself.
There are two other workshops that accompany the AI literacies interactive guide for staff - one on socially just and equitable approaches and the other on prompting and assessing appropriate use, which you can sign up for to further deepen your understanding and confidence in using GenAI.
