Dr Tabisa Mayisela
Dr Tabisa Mayisela is a Senior Lecturer, Coordinator of the Academic Staff Development cluster, and Deputy Director at the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) at the University of Cape Town. She is an experienced staff developer and instructional designer who works with academic staff on the integration of educational technologies and digital literacies into course curricula, and facilitates professional development workshops and seminars across the university.
Tabisa convenes the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education Studies and co-teaches on the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Technology and the Postgraduate Diploma in Blended and Online Learning Design (BOLD). Her research interests include students’ development of digital and AI literacies, lecturer professional development, blended and online learning design, and transformative approaches to widening access to higher education, including micro-credentials and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). She supervises Master’s and PhD students in these areas.
She holds a PhD in Education from UCT. Her expertise in digital literacies contributed to the development of the Commonwealth of Learning concept document on Curriculum for Digital Education Leadership.
From 2020 to 2022, Tabisa served as principal investigator for the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET)-funded Cases on Open Learning (COOL) research project. The project produced 16 case studies on open learning practices within the South African post-school education and training sector, which were later published in the edited volume Open Learning as a Means of Advancing Social Justice: Cases in Post-School Education and Training in South Africa. This work further informed her ongoing research and implementation work in micro-credentials and RPL, including through the development of BOLD short courses.
