No aspect of education is untouched by platforms. Though platforms can be invaluable to promote inclusive and accessible education, we have seen a significant move by public institutions towards the use of private and proprietary services.
These present significant challenges to the operation and public governance of education. In this talk we will discuss the idea of platformisation in education and wider social life, and will engage with fresh data collected by the Surveillance in Education Observatory on the platformisation of public higher education in the African continent.
Though the scenario is not optimistic, there are significant efforts to promote change, and we'll finalise with some interesting projects and ideas that are emerging to counter big tech dominance in education.
