Associate Professor Janice McMillan

Associate Professor Janice McMillan joined UCT in 1994, first in the Department of Adult Education, and since 2000, in CHED. From 2010 – mid-2019, she was the Director of the UCT Global Citizenship: Leading for Social Justice programme. (GCP), and from 2010-2014, she was also the service-learning coordinator for Stanford University's Bing overseas study programme in Cape Town. Within UCT she is a member of several university and faculty committees including the Senate University Social Responsiveness Committee. Janice was also on the Board of SHAWCO, a large student volunteer organization from 2006-2015. Janice completed her PhD in Sociology at UCT in 2008, focusing on service learning as a form of boundary work in higher education. Although organisationally still located in the ASD in CILT, since 2017 Janice has been seconded to work at the institutional level as SR co-ordinator reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor for social responsiveness (SR). Since late 2020, Janice is also involved in work on ‘decentring whiteness’ as a contribution towards UCT’s dismantling institutional racism strategy.
