Shanali Govender

Senior Lecturer

Shanali Govender is a Senior Lecturer in Academic Staff Development at the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT), University of Cape Town, where she has worked since 2013. She teaches on and co-convenes the Postgraduate Diploma in Blended and Online Learning, guest teaches on the Masters in Higher Education Studies and the Masters in Educational Technologies, and supervises students in these programmes.

At UCT, she designs and facilitates professional development for staff — including workshops, teaching circles, and short courses — and contributes to the Tutor Development Project supporting tutors, postdoctoral fellows, and emerging academics. She holds a Master's in Linguistics and is completing a PhD in Education, with research interests spanning the casualisation of academic work, online learning design, equity in higher education, assessment as social practice, and the role of AI in learning design.

Her work is grounded in the complexities of South African higher education and a commitment to more socially just educational practices.
